What is Lower Back Pain?

Structure of the Back

The back is a complex structure of bones, muscles and tissues that extends from the cranium to the coccyx (the neck to the pelvis). The key feature of the back is the spinal column. This complex structure is composed of arranged vertebrae, separated by inter-vertebral discs and held together by tendons and muscles. The spinal column not only supports the upper weight of the body but it also protects the spinal cord – that part of the body responsible for controlling the body’s movements and conveying sensations. The spinal column consists of 30 bones (the vertebrae), each of which have a small roundish looking hole. These discs allow for the body’s flexibility, acting like shock absorbers which cushion the bones as the body moves. Ligaments and tendons attach the muscles to the spinal column and hold the vertebrae in place.

The back is generally divided into four regions:
1) The seven cervical (neck) vertebrae (C1-C7),
2) the 12 thoracic (upper back) vertebrae (T1-T12),
3) the five lumbar (lower back) vertebrae (L1-L5), and
4) the sacrum and coccyx (group of bones fused together at the base of the spine).

Lower back pain is located in the lumbar region of the back, which supports the weight of the upper back.

Generally, lower back pain is classified in three ways:
1) lower back pain lasting less than 4 weeks is called acute,
2) pain lasting from 4 to 12 weeks is called sub acute,
3) and pain lasting more than 12 weeks is called chronic.
Most acute and sub acute back pain is the result of traumatic injuries. Such injuries are often the result of work or sporting injuries. Acute injuries may also result from car accidents or any other events where a sudden jolt places undue stress on spinal bones and tissues. Chronic pain, on the other hand, is usually more progressive in character.
